The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below.

Kit Highlights

For the first time in 38 years Arsenal were forced to wear a change kit in The North London Derby againt Tottenham Hotspur, this was due to PGMOL ruling that there was too much white in the Arsenal home kit, Arsenal reportedly offered to wear alternative red shorts but their offer was rejected, so it was their Away Kit that was used…!

West Ham were the first team this season to use a Kit Variation, with alternative blue socks with their Home Kit, this was also the only Home Shirt used by an Away team this Matchweek.

This was soon followed by Chelsea, in alternative socks with their Away kit.

There just 2 teams that have only 1 kit so far this season – Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Wolves also just wearing the 1 Goalkeeper as well.

Brentford and Everton are the first team to wear Home, Away and 3rd Kits this season in their opening 4 games.

My favourite Kit Match Up of the weekend was the game between Manchester City and Brentford, the two kits working well together to give a nice overall look on the pitch.

Kit Stats

Overall we have seen 11 Home Kits and 5 Away and 4 3rd Kits in action.

The first variations of the season used this weekend

  • West Ham United – Home / Blue Socks
  • Chelsea – Away / Light Orange Socks

Kit Grid – Up to 16th September

Kit News

Manchester City have release their much rumoured “4th” Kit… making it the 61st Kit of the Premier League this season, described as the below on the Manchester City website.

“Marking 30 years since the release of the album Definitely Maybe, it’s definitely City. Co-designed by lifelong Man City fan Noel Gallagher, this collection pays homage to the album that defined an era. Featuring designs inspired by the iconic Oasis album cover”

I managed to pop into the Puma store on Carnaby Street, London on the day of it’s launch to see it in person, whether the team needs a 4th Kit is another debate, but as a Kit and Kit Collection this does look great.

This may not be the last 4th Kit we see, as there is still talk of either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur launching a 4th Shirt this season linked with Air Jordan Brand.

The final two teams to release their 3rd Kits this season, did so this week…

Aston Villa, have gone for “Midnight Blue” as their alternative change kit, giving a nice balance between their three kits.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have gone for a more flamboyant colour, “Hyper Voilet” is its description, it’s bold choice to used and will be interesting to see in action.

Matchweek 30 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 103 (+3 from Matchweek 29)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 58 (No change from Matchweek 29)

New Kits this Matchweek

Even as we reach Matchweek 30 we are seeing new Kit Looks used by teams, this week there were three new kit variations used…

West Ham United used alternative sky blue shorts with their Home for the first time this season to give us a classic Hammers look, these are also the same shorts that we have seen used with the Away Kit as an alternative this season, this is the 5th kit variation used this season by West Ham.

Fulham used their 3rd Kit with alternative pink shorts and socks to give us a nice looking kit against Sheffield United, the 5th kit look used by them this season.

Luton Town used their 8th Kit Variation of the season, another “mash up” on show, using the 3rd shirt with Home shorts and socks for a nice Navy / Navy / Orange look!

Kit Highlights

Although I do not include this as a variation of kit, as the actual kit remains the same Tottenham Hotspur used a charity sponsor in their game against Luton Town, the shirt sponsorship was in support for Philippines-based breast cancer charity “I Can Serve” and supported by regular sponsor AIA.

Everton made it four kits in four games when they used their 3rd Kit at AFC Bournemouth, it is also 5 Kits in 6 games which are all the of the Kit Variations The Toffees have used this season so far!

My favourite Kit Match Up of this weekend was the game between Newcastle United and West Ham United, the balance between the two kits works well, classic looking and timeless in their appearence, this really worked well for me!

Kit Stats

Overall we have seen 14 Home Kits, 3 Away Kits and 3 3rd Kits in action for these games.

There was there was four Kit Variations on show… three we were new kit looks above.

  • West Ham United, Home with alternative Sky Blue Shorts
  • Fulham, 3rd with alternative pink shorts and socks
  • Luton Town, 3rd with Home Shorts and socks
  • Manchester United in Away with alternative white shorts and socks, 2nd time used

Kit Grid – Up to 30th March 2024

Kit News

The big Premier League Kit News during the International Break was that Castore have purchased the Umbro Brand in the UK, now what does that mean? This is the statement regarding the purchase…

We are thrilled to announce that today, we have completed a deal with Umbro licensee, GL Dameck to sign an exclusive Umbro Professional Team Sports sub-license. This sub-licence allows us to market the Umbro brand in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, and Denmark.

Following a £145 million investment round in November 2023, we will continue to innovate in the elite sports market with this Umbro Pro Team licence marking its emergence as a multi-brand business.

As a brand with a rich history at the heart of sport and a deep and storied life in elite football, having created some of the most iconic strips of all time, Umbro has an exceptional legacy. Our digital expertise and highly agile global supply chain provides a model that has allowed us to disrupt the traditional dominance of Nike and adidas. The ability to now market and supply the Umbro brand for team sports will elevate both Umbro and Castore to new levels.

The agreement also signifies our first step towards a brand segmentation strategy, enabling us to take a significant position in the UK & European elite sports markets.

Since our inception, we have rapidly grown to partner with over 50 leading sports teams worldwide through its digital first business model. We will now apply this digital expertise to the marketing of Umbro’s exceptional brand heritage and authenticity and further expand the Umbro partnership portfolio, with fans remaining at the core of its strategy.

From the start of the 2024/25 season we will have the exclusive right to seek to work with Umbro’s existing English Premier League team partnerships, including: AFC Bournemouth, Brentford, Luton Town and West Ham, as well as English Football League Clubs Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Forest Green Rovers.

We will also supply, under the Umbro brand, to Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership, where Castore is already the global kit partner for Glasgow Rangers FC, and England Rugby men’s and women’s teams at a time of heightened interest in the sport during the Guinness Six Nations.

To me, this appears that the Umbro Brand will still exist but be produced by Castore, does that mean Castore will stop as a Kit Manufacturer, we will have to wait and see!

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below or at @Kit_Geek and the Premier League Kit Review will quite quickly with a midweek round of fixtures this Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday.

New Kits this Matchweek

A couple more new kit looks on show through this round of fixtures

Nottingham Forest used their 3rd kit for the first time this season in their visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Newcastle United wore their 3rd Kit in a variation of Navy / Navy / Yellow when they played Tottenham Hotspur, although the 2nd time the 3rd shirt has been worn this season, it is the first in this look.

Kit Highlights

Chelsea used a change kit for just the 2nd time this season, both times being their 3rd kit, with The Blues yet to use their Away kit this season, one of five kits yet to be used by the teams this season!

“Sock Watch”, with Manchester United again used the Teamwear socks with the new Adidas logo this has now been used 5 times in a row (with Home Kit).

West Ham United were the only team this weekend to play in their Home Kit in an away match, this meant in the 10 games, we saw four Away Kits and five 3rd Kits in action!

The five 3rd Kits in action were the following from AFC Bournemouth, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Newcastle United, this is most 3rd Kits in action in one matchweek since MW32 of 2022/23 Season.

This was the first time that Arsenal dropped points wearing their Away Kit this season, with their defeat against Aston Villa being the fifth time that The Gunners have used the Kit, winning the previous four games.

My favourite Kit Match Up of this round of fixtures was the first game of the weekend with Crystal Palace playing Liverpool, both kits being right up there as some of the best on show this season in The Premier League.

Kit Stats

Overall we have seen 11 Home Kits, 4 Away Kits and 5 3rd kits in action in this Matchweek.

There were just the two Kit Variation on show this week…

  • Manchester United in Teamwear (new Adidas Logo) black socks with their Home Kit, the 6th time this has been used
  • Newcatle United’s 3rd kit with alternative yellow socks

Kit Grid – Up to 10th December

Kit News

Crystal Palace have launched a special 4th / Charity Shirt. The shirt will raise funds for the Palace for Life Foundation and will help the charity expand and enhance its outstanding work in the local community, with the goal of improving the lives of young South Londoners.

There are only 1000 shirts made with unique numbers on each of the shirts, all profits going to the charity and will be worn by both Women’s and Men’s teams in their respective FA Cup Fixtures, Women against Chatham Town on 10th December 2023 and Men against Everton on 4th January 2024.

With only a day between the end of Matchweek 15 and start of Matchweek 16 we thought there would be no kit news so thank you Crystal Palace…!!

That wraps up Matchweek 16, European Club Football returns this week, so expect to see some in depth kit reviews of the Group Stage of The Champions League at the end of the week.

Premier League: Matchweek 9 Kit Review

The second International Break is completed and the Premier League returns reaching Matchweek 9 and we around a quarter of the way through the season..!

As always you can find Matchweek 8’s review – here

The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below, we now have all 60 shirts released… still waiting for confirmation of the shorts that will be used with Luton Town’s 3rd.

Matchweek 9 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 60 (+4 from Matchweek 8)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 47 (No Change from Matchweek 8)

New Kits this Matchweek

There was quite a few new kits on show this Matchweek, with four new looks seen!

Brighton & Hove Albion were used their Away Kit for the 2023/24 season for the first time, this was the first time they have used any change kit this season.

Luton Town used another different combination of their Away kit, this one paired with Home Shorts created the third different look on the road this season with their change shirt!

Manchester United used their Away kit for the second time, this time paired with bespoke alternative White Shorts and socks. We will talk about this kit a bit more in the Kit Highlights….

West Ham United used their Away for the fourth time this season, however this look was paired with Alternative light blue shorts, likely to be also available to use with Home Kit too.

Kit Highlights

As with most weeks we will start with Manchester United, who wore their 7th Kit Variation in the opening 9 games of the season, with their Away Kit with alternative shorts and socks at Sheffield United

There was some controversy around this shirt choice given the impacts to colourblind fans / viewers (impacting 12% of Male population, 5% Female population), arguably it could be considered that the 3rd All “Off-White” Kit may have been a more suitbale alternative given the prodomentaly red Sheffield United Shirt.

Although there was no “new” goalkeeper kit on show, there was an interesting detail highlighed by Museum of Jerserys with Manchester United’s goalkeeper kit, with André Onana has now worn both the Competition and Pro versions of the yellow Tiro 23, wearing the Pro version of the shirt this weekend

Details of differences can be seen below in the illistration from MoJ. There is also a difference in fit, with the competition version being a more form fitting shirt, could this be the reason behind the choice in style of shirt?

Luton Town have now used their Away Kit with three different combinations and yet to use it in its default All White look. Each variation has only been used the once but we have seen the following (SHIRT / SHORTS / SOCKS):

  • Away / Away / 3rd at Chelsea
  • Away / Home / Home at Everton
  • Away / Home / Away at Nottingham Forest

My favourite kit match up of the weekend was the game was the Claret / Blue Derby with Aston Villa and West Ham United, the use of the alternative shorts by West Ham and the claret details in collar / cuff of their away shirt gave a nice overall balance against Aston Villa in their home kit, very pleasing on the eye (for me anyway).

Kit Stats

Overall we have seen 13 Home Kits, 5 Away Kits and 2 3rd kits in action in this Matchweek.

However there were a few variations on show as we looked in the new kits of the week!

  • Arsenal in alternative red socks with their home kit for the 2nd time
  • Luton Town, Away with Home shorts
  • Manchester United, Away with alternative white shorts and socks
  • West Ham United, Away with alternative blue shorts

Liverpool are now the only team to wear just one kit this season, now 9 games since the start of season in their Home Kit, being at Home Next week means this is streak will continue for 10 games.

And again Everton have used just the one Goalkeeper kit

Kit Grid – Up to 24th October

Kit News

A very quiet week on the Premier League Kit News front.

The only story that peaked our interest was after signing for Luton Town Andros Townsend is going for a slight change of name on his shirt for his new club, adding “Sr” to as a tribute his son (Andros Junior).

That wraps up Matchweek 8 and a few new kits on show, some interesting kit highlights.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below or at @Kit_Geek and Matchweek Kit Review will return next week.

Kit News, Edition 2 – West Ham United & Umbro 2019/20

I would not normally write a post about one kit, however I want to take some time to talk about West Ham United’s Home and Away Kits for 2019/20 season from Umbro.

There were some leaked images hitting the internet earlier on this week and my initial thoughts were please let this be real…. and Finally on Wednesday the official release and the relief to know that those images were indeed what we will see gracing the London Stadium and other Premier League grounds in this upcoming season.

WHU_1920_a

Looking at the launch of kit, the marketing is already talking about “Inspired by the Class of ’80” and then digging into detail behind the design, it is clear that Umbro were looking to create a retro feel for their designs for “The Hammers”.  – Click here to go to West Ham’s page

Home Kit

WHU_1920_b

The home kit based on the classic admiral kit used between 1977 and 1980 is paired with Claret shorts and socks as first choice, from what I can see and research this is the first time in the club’s history that this colour combination has been used as default home kit.

Away Kit

WHU_1920_c

The away kit is based on the kit worn in the 1980 FA Cup Final win against Arsenal and it a simple all white kit and as it’s 1980 cousin has some “claret and blue” striped trim on collar and sleeve cuffs, there is also some detailing celebrating that Cup win on the back of the neck.

Something else that West Ham United have done right, is to offer fans both home and away kits an option of a “Unsponsored” version of the shirts, however this still includes the club’s sleeve sponsor (it is one of the more aesthetically pleasing). From my initial tweet about this, one that has hit a chord with fans across all clubs – see tweet here

WHU_1920_e

These kits have set a high bar for the 2019/20 kits and I applaud what Umbro and West Ham United have done here…..

Quite simply, this is retro done right!

Please let me know your thoughts about this kit on the comments below or via Twitter – @Kit_Geek
