Premier League: Matchweek 18 Kit Review

The Christmas fixtures continue with Matchweek 18 being completed over the four days before Christmas, however due to the Manchester City’s participation (and victory) in the World Club Championship, their fixture with Brentford was postponed and will take place later in the season.

As always you can find last week Matchweek’s review – here

The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below, we now have all 60 shirts released… still waiting for confirmation of the shorts that will be used with Luton Town’s 3rd.

Matchweek 18 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 84 (+3 from Matchweek 17)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 55 (No change from Matchweek 17)

New Kits this Matchweek

Brighton & Hove Albion wore alternative white shorts and socks with their away shirt when they visited rivals Crystal Palace on 21st December, this is the 3rd different look used by The Seagulls with their Away shirt (Black shorts / socks and White shorts / Black socks).

There were also two completely unseen kits used in this matchweek, with Everton using their Away Kit for the first time at Tottenham Hotspur.

And Chelsea also used their Away Kit for the first time this season on their Christmas Eve (!!!) visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kit Highlights

Aston Villa dropped points in their default home kit for the first time this season, having won the previous eight games in home shirt with white shorts and sky blue socks.

Manchester United used their black goalkeeper kit template for only the second time this season and the first since the opening matchweek / game.

Due the postponement of the Manchester City v Brentford game, meant that the nine away teams in this matchweek all used change kits

My favourite Kit Match Up of this week was Tottenham Hotspur against Everton, there is some classy about Spurs in all white that really works for me, matched up with a wonderful Everton Kit being used for the first time just looks great!

Kit Stats

Overall we have seen 9 Home Kits, 6 Away Kit and 3 3rd kits in action in this Matchweek (one match abandoned)

There were three Kit Variation on show this week…

  • Brighton & Hove Albion in Away with white shorts & socks
  • Manchester United in their 3rd Kit with white socks, to create their all white look for the third time this season
  • Newcastle United used their 3rd Kit with yellow shorts and socks for the second time

Kit Grid – Up to 24th December

Premier League: Matchweek 8 Kit Review

The Premier League reaches Matchweek 8 and it’s second International Break of the season, overall a reasonably quiet week in terms of Kits in terms of usage and new but let’s take a look at the Kits from this weekend.

As always you can find Matchweek 7’s review – here

The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below, we now have all 60 shirts released… still waiting for confirmation of the shorts that will be used with Luton Town’s 3rd.

Matchweek 8 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 56 (+1 from Matchweek 7)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 47 (+1 from Matchweek 7)

New Kits this Matchweek

As we start to get into the season, the new kits on show contunue to slow down and this was seen again this week where there was just one new kit look on show.

Tottenham Hotspur used their 3rd kit for the first time in the Premier League, having worn the Kit in the Carabao (League) Cup against Fulham.

1 New Goalkeeper Kit:

Burnley – Two Tone Blue (worn against Luton Town on 3rd October)

Kit Highlights

Again, as last week there is only place to start, is Manchester United “SOCK WATCH” ….

And it is the Teamwear socks again with the Adidas Wordmark… this is two games in a row for these socks, so could they be the sock of choice from now on… who knows!

Another notable Kit Highlight from this game was that Brentford have been in change kits for all their away games so far, using their 3rd Kit for the third time this season at Manchester United, and used change kits four times overall.

Sheffield United continued their use of their away kit when playing on the road this season, their yellow second choice kit was used for the fourth time.

My favourite kit match up of the weekend was the game between Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool, mainly because both clubs have only used their Home / Primary Kits so far in the Premier League this season, so this match up means that run will continue into Matchweek 9!

Kit Stats

Overall we have seen 15 Home Kits, 3 Away Kits and 2 3rd kits in action in this Matchweek.

However there were just one variation on show!

  • Manchester United in those teamwear socks again

We still have two teams who have only worn 1 kit this season in the opening 8 games

  • Brighton and Hove Albion
  • Liverpool

And again Everton have used just the one Goalkeeper kit

Kit Grid – Up to 3rd October

Kit News

There has been both confirmation of Newcastle United leaving Castore and rumours of Aston Villa ending their deal with the manufacturer earlier but it looks a current Premier League Club will be joining their stable from next season, with Everton set to move to them when their deal with Hummel coming to an end this season. This has been reported in the media with sources at the club confirming this.

That wraps up Matchweek 8 and a quiet week in terms of Kits.

Boreham Wood FA Cup Kit

Boreham Wood the final Non League Team left in the 2021/22 FA Cup are facing Premier League side Everton in The Fifth Round of the competition on Thursday 3rd March. Due to a clash between Boreham Wood’s Home Kit (all white) and Away Kit (Sky Blue) with Everton’s Blue / White Home kit and new 3rd Kit has been comissioned for the game. In a gesture to their opponents Everton offered to cover the costs of the new kit to support the club.

The kit may look familar, this is same template used by Manchester City and Crystal Palace Goalkeepers. Full details of the story can be found on Boreham Wood’s website here

Cheslea World Club Champions

After winning the World Club Championship, Chelsea took to the field in the Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday 19th February sporting the “World Club Champions” badge, this is likely to be the only time we will see this badge in the Premier League based on the current Premier League rules, however it will be used in European Competitions.

My personal opinion here is that is a real shame, I believe we should be proud to have The World Champions in the Premier League and they should be allowed to wear the badge until the next competition.

Luton Town – New Sponsor

Luton Town took to the field on 19th February with a new front of shirt sponsor for their home kit. Utilita replace JB Developments for the remander of the season.

Full details can be found on Luton Town’s website here

Schalke 04 Sponsorship amendment

FC Schalke 04 have made the decision to remove their current sponsor given the global situation and the links their current sponsor has with the Russian State. They will replace the sponsor with simple wording of “SCHALKE 04” (mocked up example below from our friends at @KITmagazine_

German Newspaper BILD also replaced the sponsor with another logo in their recent publication.

And Finally….

Whats happening in the Kit Community.

I like to end each issue with some of the “going ons” within the Kit Community.

The always wonderful @KitblissNZ has followed up his 100 Greatest Football Shirt Templates countdown with a podcast to accompany the first few enteries, well worth checking out Kitbliss Podcast

It will be worth keeping an eye on what Phil Delves is up to in the coming weeks, Phil recently used this tweet to not only deliver a power message but to give a sneak peek of upcoming project, definitely watch this space here

Masters Football is returning this summer, so I put a poll out about kits, would you prefer to see teams using their current kits or sport something that was more “Retro Inspired”… the results were very much one sided and not surprising, I wonder what we will see??
