Champions League: Match 1, Kit Review

This season see a new format of the Champions League, so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and create a Matchweek Kit Review, much like my Premier League ones… so here we are, looking at Match 1 of The Champions League, 2024/25 Edition!

The current Kit Overview for Kits worn by The Champions League Teams.

This gives 103 of the 108 Kits of the 36 Teams, but there will be more thanks to a 4th Kits or Cup Kits that we are likely to see in use over the coming months!

Match 1 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 36

New Kits this Matchweek

As the first week of the Competition, all 36 kits are being used for the first time!

Kit Highlights

Due to some of the regional country laws around sponsorship gave some slightly different Kit Looks..

Aston Villa wore a Charity Sponsor (one they have used before) in their game at BSC Young Boys, their first game in Europe’s Premier Competition for over 40 years!

Stuttgart wore their Away Kit at Real Madrid, but went with no sponsor to give them a plan chest band on the kit, for a classic look!

Bayern Munich followed their recent trend of wearing change kits in Home European games, by wearing their “Trefoil” Clad 3rd Kit in the emphatic 9-2 victory against Dinamo Zagreb.

As pointed out by our friend Denis of Museum of Jerseys all 11 of Liverpool players were in Green, although different shades in their game at AC Milan.

Manchester City debuted their 4th Kit in their Home game against …., released just last week they were quick to use the kit (even before using their 3rd kit) and it was in a Home fixture, is this a trend we will see for the rest of the campaign for The English Champions!

Only three teams wore Home Kits in Away games, Inter Milan at Manchester City (possible only due to 4th kit being worn at Home), Girona at PSG and Arsenal at Atalanta.

Borussia Dortmund wore their “Cup Kit” at Club Brugge, so could be argued it was actually four teams!

My favourite Kit Match of the week was the game between AS Monaco and Barcelona, a nice Kit Match up with two good kits for these teams this season..!

Matchweek 2 is now completed, with all teams now playing at Home this season.

The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below.

We have seen 55 out of 60 Kits released so far… with just 5 Teams left to release their 3rd Kits.

Matchweek 2 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 32 (+12 Kits this Matchweek)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 31 (+11 Kits this Matchweek)

New Kits this Matchweek

There were a total of 12 new kits seen this weekend, being the 2nd round of fixtures there is no surprise there, with the following teams at Home and in their Home Kit for the first time this season…

  • Brighton & Hove Albion
  • Crystal Palace
  • Southampton
  • Aston Villa
  • AFC Bournemouth

That means there was seven change kits used for the first time

  • West Ham United, 3rd
  • Ipswich Town, Away
  • Nottingham Forest, 3rd
  • Everton, Away
  • Arsenal, Away
  • Newcastle United, 3rd
  • Brentford, Away

Kit Highlights

I am starting with Goalkeeper Kits this week, with the four Umbro supplied teams seeing their Goalkeepers using the same template / colour this weekend, possibly no surprise but I wanted to call out…!

There were 8 Teams that have worn their Home Kits in their opening 2 games of the season, Manchester United, Fulham, Leicester City, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves, Chelsea and Liverpool.

3rd Kits were used for the first time this season, with West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United using 3rd Kits this weekend.

AFC Bournemouth celebrated their 125th Anniversary with some special match detailing on their shirt worn against Newcastle United, the special crest will only be used in this game.

My favourite Kit Match Up of the weekend was the game between Aston Villa and Arsenal, for the second week in a row I have gone for Adidas v Adidas but both these kits being used for the first time this season really worked together and the Arsenal Away kit looked better in action that I was expecting!

Overall we have seen 13 Home Kits and 4 Away and 3 3rd Kits in action.

There were no Kit variations used in this Matchweek

Kit Grid – Up to 26th August

Kit News

There were two Kits launched this week, both on Friday 23rd August.

Everton, who’s 3rd Kit takes influence of the 100 year anniversary of an exhibition baseball game hosted at Goodison Park. On 23 October 1924, Chicago White Sox and New York Giants played at the ground. The Kit is neutral colour, almost cream (or Ecru) in colour with Navy and Yellow detailing, paired with Navy Shorts and neutral socks completing their first kits from Castore.

Nottingham Forest also released their 3rd Kit, which is light / sky blue in the current Adidas template and worn with white shorts and sky blue socks, and was also debuted this weekend at Southampton.

Here we go again…

The 2024 / 25 Premier League Season has now kicked off and just like last season, I will be taking a more in depth look into the Kits each Matchweek.

The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below.

We have seen 53 out of 60 Kits released so far… with just 7 Teams left to release their 3rd Kits.

Matchweek 1 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 20
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 20

New Kits this Matchweek

Of course all kits this week are being used for the first time this season, more details will appear in this section as we move through the season and new kit looks / variations are used.

Kit Highlights

There was just the one “Kit Mash” up on show, Aston Villa who launched their Away Kit the day before their game at West Ham, went with pairing their new kit with their Home Socks to avoid a clash with West Ham who are in White Shorts and Socks this season.

Chelsea started their second consecutive season with no front of shirt sponsor, no agreement was in place for the deadline to add a sponsor, so just as last season it will be a few weeks before we see any changes here.

Arsenal started the season in an unexpected Goalkeeper Kit, having previously advised that they would use the yellow and pink versions of the current Adidas Tiro 24 template, as well as the plain Black Adidas Orginals shirt as a 3rd Option, it was the Black Tiro 24 that was used in the opening game… could be an interesting season for Keeper Kits at The Emirates, with rumours of a 5th keeper look potentially being used this season.

My favourite Kit Match Up of the weekend was the game between Manchester United and Fulham, and its mainly related to those shorts… their design and look is one of my favourite kit details of this season, so seeing two team in this look was great to see in action in the opening game of the season.

Overall we have seen 15 Home Kits and 5 Away, with no 3rd Kits in action.

Premier League: Top Trumps 2023/24

I like to look at Football Kits and Kit Stats in many ways, one way that I wanted to revisist for the previous seasons was a Top Trump format.

So for those of a certain age will know all about Top Trumps, so for this set I have looked at the kits of each of the 20 Premier League Teams, Home, Away and Third kits and stats around these kits, the stats I have picked are the following:

  • League Games Worn – How many league games was the kit (and variations) worn
  • Variations of Kit – The number of variations of that kit were worn
  • Games Won – Number of games won wearing the kit(s)
  • Points Won – Number of points won wearing the kit(s)
  • Points per game – The average number of points per game (total points / games worn) per kit

I have highlighted the “Top Trump” in each section in “Gold and Black”.

The cards by each team….

There they are, 60 Top Trump cards… any surprises there, Wolverhampton Wanderers points per game in their change kits, Tottenham Hotspur scoring 54 points in their home kit, Luton Town’s 4 variations of their 3rd Kit?

What would you consider as the overall “Top Trump” card, Manchester City Home Kit or something else?

Matchweek 31 was the third round of Midweek Fixtures this season (outside of Christmas Period) with all teams being in action over three days. This round of fixtures being the reverse games of Matchweek 15 back in December, which was also a Midweek Round of fixtures.

The current Kit Overview for Premier League is below, we now have confirmation that Luton Town’s 3rd kit is paired with navy (same as Home Kit) shorts.

Matchweek 31 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 105 (+2 from Matchweek 30)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 58 (No change from Matchweek 30)

New Kits this Matchweek

There were two new kit look in these midweek fixtures…

Everton were in their Home Kit with alternative blue socks for the first time this season, a classic Everton look of Blue / White / Blue.

Luton Town used their 3rd Kit in it’s default look of all navy for the first time, their 2nd new look in 2 games!

Kit Highlights

Everton using a new kit variation for their home kit meant that is five different kit looks in the last five games.. and six in last seven!

Fulham have worn four kits in the last four games, with two different home and 3rd Kit looks!

Another team with four kits in four games is Luton Town with the use of the default All Navy 3rd Kit for the first time, this also means that Luton have used nine kits in total this season so far, the 2nd Highest in the Premier League!

My favourite Kit Match Up of this weekend was the game between Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, the use of alternative white shorts and socks gives a nice overall balance to the Kit Look, two nice kits!

Overall we have seen 16 Home Kits, 3 Away Kits and 1 3rd Kit in action for these games.

There was there were four Kit Variations on show…

  • Everton in Home Kit with alternative blue socks
  • Fulham, in Home Kit with alternative white socks, the 6th time this look has been used this season
  • Brighton & Hove Albion in their Away Kit with white shorts and socks, the 3rd time used
  • Aston Villa in Home Kit with claret shorts and socks, also the 3rd time used

As well has having a new kit provider in Adidas, Aston Villa have reportedly signed a new front of shirt sponsorship deal with Betano a Greek Betting Company, with a new crest also in the pipeline it will be a completey new look for The Villians next season!

Newcastle United look like they will be wearing a special one off kit in their game against Tottenham Hotspur on 13th April, as well has having a charity sponsor for the game it is reported that The Magpies will wear a kit “unique from any other in club’s history“… one to keep an eye on in the next week!

Matchweek 28 is now completed, time to take a deeper look into the kits of the weekend with this round of fixtures being the reverse games of Matchweek 13

Matchweek 27 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 100 (No change from Matchweek 27)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 58 (No change from Matchweek 27)

New Kits this Matchweek

There were no new kits on show this weekend, the first time since Matchweek 17, and only the second Matchweek of the season where we have not seen any new outfield, however this is the first time we have seen no new outfield or Goalkeeper kits in a single Matchweek.

Kit Highlights

Luton Town wore their default Away Kit look for just the 2nd time this season at Crystal Palace, they have worn the away shirt in various kit mash ups for 8 times in total but this look was used for the first time since it debuted against Manchester United in Matchweek 12.

Fulham wore their 3rd Kit at Wolverhampton Wanderers, this was their first outing in this kit since Matchweek 9, which was 19 games ago!

My favourite Kit Match Up of this weekend was the game between Arsenal and Brentford, with the visitors in the 3rd kit with alternative navy socks giving a nice overall balance to the Kits on show at The Emirates Stadium, this also means that both fixtures between these clubs have been my Kit Match Up of the week.

Overall we have seen 15 Home Kits, 3 Away Kits and 2 3rd Kits in action in this Matchweek.

There was there three Kit Variations on show this week.

  • Everton were in Home Kit, with alternative blue shorts and socks, the 3rd time they have been in all blue
  • Brentford in their 3rd Kit with alternative Navy Socks, the 2nd time this has been used
  • Newcastle United in Home kit with black socks, for the 5th time this season

Everton has released a special Pre-Match Shirt which is in celebration of Club Captain Seamus Coleman 15 Years at the Club, the shirt uses Coleman’s shirt number of 23 to make up shamrock pattern’s to honour the Irishman.

Some European Kit New with Aston Villa, who had a slight change to their Kit Look in their Europa Conference Last 16 Game at Ajax on Thursday 7th March. Due to a change in Dutch Advertising regulatation last summer which impacted Betting Sponsorship, this meant a return to the front of the shirt for Acorns, a local children’s hospice charity that we have previously seen as headline shirt sponsor between 2008 and 2010.

Premier League: Matchweek 25 Kit Review

Matchweek 25 is now completed and see the reverse fixtures from Matchweek 12 and see the League approach the 2/3rd of the season mark, so lets take a look at the kits worn this weekend in a little more detail.

Matchweek 25 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 98 (+1 from Matchweek 24)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 58 (No change from Matchweek 24)

New Kits this Matchweek

There was just the one new kit on show this weekend.

AFC Bournemouth wore their first Kit Variation of the season, with their away kit being used with alternative navy socks to their visit to Newcastle United, this becomes the 98th Kit used in the Premier League this season!

Kit Highlights

Wolverhampton Wanderers have now used their Away Kit four times this season, racking up 10 point with three victories and draw, the fourth team to reach double figures for points but have the joint highest “Points per game” in the Kit with Liverpool.

Aston Villa were the only team this matchweek to wear their Home Kit away from home, it also is the first time that they have worn their Default Home Kit (Home Shirt / White shorts & Sky Blue Socks) away from Villa Park this season in the Premier League.

My favourite Kit Match Up of this weekend was at the game between Brentford and Liverpool, one of the best Brentford Home Kits in their Umbro period, and an interesting Liverpool 3rd Kit, the Purple an unusual colour in football but one that has strong links with the city of Liverpool, this Kit does work well for me and matched up with this Brentford kit gave us a good kit match up.

Overall we have seen 11 Home Kits, 7 Away Kits and 2 3rd Kits in action in this Matchweek

  • AFC Bournemouth in Away Kit with Navy Socks
  • West Ham United in Away Kit with alternative sky blue shorts, 3rd time this look has been used
  • Brighton & Hove Albion in Away Kit with white shorts and socks, the 2nd time used
  • Manchester United in 3rd Kit with alternative white socks, the 5th time they have been used
  • Crystal Palace in Away / Home Kit Mash up, with Away kit paired with Home socks, the 2nd time seen in the League

Premier League: Matchweek 24 Kit Review

Matchweek 24 is another quickly followed round with the reverse fixtures are from Matchweek 19 which were the fixtures that of “Boxing Day” round of games, just six weeks ago. Another querk of these games is that this also means that due to their meeting in the FA Cup 3rd Round and its replay it will be the fourth time that Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers have met since then!

Matchweek 24 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 97 (+2 from Matchweek 23)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 58 (No change from Matchweek 23)

New Kits this Matchweek

There were two new kits on show in this Matchweek,

Newcastle United wore their default 3rd Kit for the first time, it is the third different look for this kit but the first time as it was intended with Navy shorts and white socks!

Manchester United wore their 3rd kit in its second different look in the Premier League this season, with alternative red shorts.. although already seen this season in The Champions League this was the first time this look was used in League and the first time Red Shorts have been used by The Red Devils since 1956/57 season – details can be found here at Musuem of Jerseys!

Kit Highlights

Sheffield United recorded their first win of the season in a change kit, with their 3-1 at Luton Town on Saturday 10th February.

Manchester United have now worn 11 Kit variations this season in their 24 games so far! They have used six different Home Kit looks….

With their Change Kits, they have three Different Away Kit and now two different 3rd Kits!

Brentford were the only team this Matchweek to wear their Home Kit in an Away game. Interestingly when they met Wolverhampton Wanderers in their recent FA Cup 3rd Round Reply on 16th January, they wore their 3rd kit for that fixture but doned their Home Kit just a few weeks later.

My favourite Kit Match Up of this week’s games was a tough one this week, with no real stand outs but I have given it to Aston Villa’s game against Manchester United, purely seeing Manchester United in red shorts in a domestic game for the first time for nearly 70 Years is worth remembering!

Overall we have seen 10 Home Kits, 5 Away Kits and 3 3rd Kits in action in this Matchweek

Premier League: Matchweek 22 Kit Review

Matchweek 22 was the second round of Midweek fixtures (outside the Christmas Period), with all 20 Teams in action across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (30th January to 1st February).

Matchweek 21 Fixtures

Total Kits Used

  • Kits Worn in Total – 94 (+3 from Matchweek 21)
  • Goalkeeper Kits – 58 (+1 from Matchweek 21)

New Kits this Matchweek

There were three new kit looks on show through these fixtures and one new goalkeeper kit!

Brighton & Hove Albion wore an alternative white shorts and socks with their Home Kit for the first time, a nice overall look that still keeps the overall classic Brighton feel to the kit!

Everton used their Away Kit just the second time this season but this time with alternative “salmon” shorts and socks for lovely looking overall Kit… I think I might even prefer the look here than the standard navy shorts and socks.

Brentford wore their 3rd Kit with alternative navy socks, this was the first kit variation worn by The Bees this season but thats not all from this them this week….

There was also a new Goalkeeper Kit on show for Brentford, the first team to wear 4 goalkeeper kits this season. This was a purple version of last seasons keeper template which has also been worn by Luton Town this season!

Kit Highlights

An “interesting” Kit Stat from the game between Aston Villa and Newcastle United, the result of Newcastle United winning meant this was the first time Aston Villa had suffered defeat in their default Home Kit this season as well as being the first League victory for Newcatle United in alternative Black Socks with their Home Kit….!

Brentford became the first team to wear four goalkeeper kits this season, with their use of the purple template from last season’s Umbro catalogue.

My favourite Kit Match Up of these midweek fixtures has to be Fulham and Everton, the use of red and white details in the Fulham Home kit is one of favourite little details this season, paired with cracking Everton away kit with what is arguably better alternative shorts and socks is a winner for me!

With Paris St. Germain’s Jordan Kit “deal” coming to an end this season we thought they may be the end of the “Jumpman” logo featuring on Football Kits, however it has been reported that a London Club is being looked at to take up the logo moving forward… with currently Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur being in the Nike camp, it likely to be one of these clubs with Chelsea being rumoured as the preferred option.

Premier League: Matchweek 21 Kit Review

Matchweek 21 is a unique Matchweek in the Premier League season, with the fixtures being split over two weekends to give each of the teams a mini “mid-season” winter break, there was five fixture played over the weekend of 12th to 14th January and the remaining five fixtures on 20th to 22nd January.

New Kits this Matchweek

There were two new kit look on show through these fixtures.

Crystal Palace have worn their 3rd twice already this season, including the opening fixture back in August, however this is the first time that the kit has been worn in default look of all black, with the black socks getting the debut outing!

Nottingham Forest used their 3rd Kit with bespoke alternative orange shorts and socks for the first time this season in their game against Brentford, the overall look worked well with amount of orange in the shirt… a nice alternative and opens up more opportunities for mix and matching with the default navy blue shorts and socks.

Kit Highlights

Manchester United “Sock Watch”, it was the 2023 Adidas Teamwear socks again in the home game against Tottenham Hotspur, this seems to be the go to sock now for The Red Devils…

Wolverhampton Wanderers wore their away kit for only the second time this season and the first time since the third game of the season back in August against Everton, this also means they have worn Home, Away and 3rd Kits in their last three games!

My favourite Kit Match Up of this week was the match up between Brentford and Nottingham Forest, the alternative look against the classic Brentford kit worked well for me, I have seen comments that considered this to be a kit clash but I think there is enough destinction between the light and dark shorts and socks and in the shirts that this worked well under the lights of Gtech Community Stadium!

Overall we have seen 14 Home Kits, 3 Away Kits and 3 3rd Kits in action in this Matchweek

There were four Kit Variation on show this week.

  • Luton Town, Away Kit with Home Shorts and Socks, this is the 3rd time this look has been used
  • Manchester United’s again in Black Teamwear Socks (with updated Adidas Logo), the 8th time they have been worn
  • Aston Villa, Home Kit with alternative claret shorts and socks, the 2nd time for this look
  • Nottingham Forest’s 3rd Kit with alternative shorts and socks (see above)

Kit News

It is being widely reported that Aston Villa have signed “Major” Deal with Adidas, replacing Castore from next season. Aston Villa have been supplied by the many kit manufacturers over the years, however this would be the first time that they have worn the “Three Stripes” of Adidas and will be the second club to move from Castore to Adidas with Newcastle United also making that change from 2024/25 Season – Image from @TheShirtUnion

Manchester City have released a “Year of the Dragon” shirt to celebrate the Chinese New Year and it has been reported that this kit will be worn by both Men and Women’s teams at some point this season, with the kit having its own designed nameset I wonder if it will be a cup game that we see this kit, however with the Men away at Tottenham Hotspur in the 4th Round, its not likely to be that game.

Another interesting story that was being report at the end of last week was the potential introduction of “4th” Kits from 2024/25 season. It is not clear if this will be for every team but the reports suggested that one of Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea will have a 4th Kit available for regular use and not seen as a “Special Kit”. 

So what we have seen with Crystal Palace and Arsenal this season may become the norm in future season within Premier League!
