FA Cup – 2024 / 25

On Saturday 17th May 2025, the 143rd FA Cup Final was hosted at Wembley between Crystal Palace and Manchester City. Crystal Palace lifted the Cup, their first major trophy win in their History.

A total of 745 teams entered the competition, with 124 teams competing from First Round onward. This was the first time in the competition’s history that there were no replays played from the First Round.

I am taking this opportunity to look back at this season’s competition and the Kits worn by the teams from the First Round.

First Round – 1st November to 4th November 2024

80 Teams kicked off the First Round of the FA Cup this season, 48 teams from League One and League Two and 32 Non-League Teams, with Horsham and Guiseley being the lowest ranked teams in the competition, playing in the 7th Tier of English Football.

Tamworth and Huddersfield Town provided an interesting Kit Match up, with a lot going on with both kits, my favourite match up of this round.

Shrewsbury Town wore a mash up of their Away Kit / Home shorts and socks, a look they did not use in their League One Campaign.

Another nice looking Kit Match up was the game between Woking and Cambridge United, Woking in their traditional white / red halved shirt, matched up against Cambridge’s wonderful 3rd kit!

Second Round – 29th November to 1st December 2024

40 Teams in the Second Round, with only 9 Non League Clubs remaining in the competition.

Wealdstone and Wycombe Wanderers Kit match up was a nice one, with Wycombe in their 3rd Kit, one of Hummel’s “Mexico” Templates.

There was a lot of Blue / Yellow on show when AFC Wimbledon hosted Dagenham & Redbridge. The National League side who won this game, played all games from the First to Third Round in their Away Kit.

I do have a soft spot for Red / Black Kits (I think its a love of AC Milan from the 80s / 90s), so Kettering Town’s Home Kit was great to see in action, and matched up with Doncaster Rover’s Away kit gave us a nice looking Kit Match up!

Third Round – 9th January to 14th January 2025

The FA Cup Third Round, one of the highlights of the English Football Calendar with teams from Premier League and Championship entering the competition, giving us a total of 64 Teams left to compete, there was just two Non-League teams left, with Tamworth and Dagenham & Redbridge.

Aston Villa used the FA Cup to wear their special 150th Anniversary Kit, a wonderful looking kit that was elegant in it’s simplicity, carry an original Club Crest and just player Numbers, a shame it was only used in this one game.

Arsenal used their “No More Red” special Charity Kit, their fourth year of wearing an all white kit to highlight their campaign against youth violence and knife crime.

Another team in a special kit was Accrington Stanley, who wore a one off kit for their trip to Anfield to play Liverpool.

Fourth Round – 7th February to 11th February 2025

The Competition is now taking to take shape, with 32 teams left competing.

Coventry City wore a special “4th Kit” for their game against Ipswich Town, the kit was the same design / template as their Home Kit but in Navy with tonal crest, logo and sponsorship.

Chelsea used their 3rd Kit for the first time in a domestic game this season, it has only been used twice this season both games against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Fifth Round – 28th February to 3rd March 2025

In the Fifth Round, 16 teams left with just 4 of those being outside the Premier League.

Wolverhampton Wanderers wore alternative “Old Gold” Shorts, they used this all “Old Gold” look in their FA Cup Games this season.

One of my favourite kit usages is when a team wears a “Tri-colour” kit, with all elements of the Kit being in different colours, so Manchester City against Plymouth Argyle produced a wonderful Kit Match up with both teams in “Tri-Colour” Kits.

Quarter-Finals – 29th March to 30th March 2025

Just eight teams left in the competition, with just Preston North End being a team from outside the Premier League.

Brighton & Hove Albion had an interesting Kit Choice, when wearing their Home Kit in this season’s competition, they wore alternative blue socks in each of it’s three appearances.

Every team in the Quarter-Finals wore their Home Kit.

Semi-Finals – 26th April to 27th April 2025

There was not a lot to talk about in terms of kit in the Semi-Finals.

Aston Villa wore all white, this is using the white home shorts (the default Away shorts are sky blue), they have used this look in all Competitions (Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Champions League) this season.

One detail to call out is with Manchester City’s Kit, is their use of a non branded FA Cup Sleeve patch this season.

This has been an ongoing issue between the Club and FA regarding sponsorship, with FA Cup being sponsored by one of Manchester City’s sponsors biggest competitors and over recent seasons they have not worn any sleeve patch (which did carry a fine for the club) but it looks like an alternative has been found with this patch being worn.

Final – 17th May 2025

Crystal Palace wore alternative white socks in the final, a look they have not used as yet this season and one that I am sure will go down in history after their victory against Manchester City, this was their 3rd different Kit Look of their campaign.

And there we have it, the FA Cup 2024 / 25… congratulations to Crystal Palace once again!

FA Cup 2024/25 – 3rd Round Kits

The FA Cup 3rd Round is one of the highlights of the English football season, with teams from Premier League and Championship entering the competition with those from League One, League Two and Non-League Teams.

Time for a quick recap….

1st Round – 1st November to 4th November 2024

2nd Round – 29th November to 1st December 2024

The 3rd Round this season was played over 6 days, between Thursday 9th January to Tuesday 14th January (the games on 14th January were 3 matches postponed from Saturday 11th January), there are 32 games in total in this round and all games were played to a final result, with replays now scrapped from this season!

Everton were one of the teams that kicked the FA Cup 3rd Round off on Thursday evening were they played Peterborough United. The wore alternative blue socks at Home (default socks are white), it turns out Peterborough United turned up using their Away Kit which used white socks as well, so Everton made the switch to blue socks to avoid the clash.

Aston Villa are celebrating their 150th Anniversary this season and used their FA Cup game on Friday 10th January to wear their celebration kit. The Black shirt with red lion pays tribute to the first kit worn by the club in 1875, the kit was paired with white shorts and black socks, also the shirt did not contain any sponsors, the Adidas logo was “Blacked” out and the only player numbers were worn, not names. A truly wonderful look, that I do hope we get to see again this year!

They also used a special goalkeeper kit too, so it was nice to see the whole team get something different in this case.

Liverpool v Accrington Stanley (who are they – yes, you have to be a certain vintage to get that reference) was another game with a special kit, with Accrington Stanley wearing a special one off change kit to commemorate their appearance at Anfield. This was also the 3rd different kit used by Accrington in their 3 FA Cup games, having worn Away in the 1st Round (at Rushall Olympic) and Home Kit (home to Swindon Town).

Brighton & Hove Albion used alternative socks in their game against Norwich City, not necessarily anything to be looked into here, however they used alternative white shorts through-out their Carabao Cup campaign (3 Home games), so will this be another alternative look from the Premier League? Let’s see what happens in the 4th Round.

I wanted to call out our Friends at The Terrace, who’s wonderful Morecambe Kit got some get visibility when the team played at Chelsea…

Something very interesting with the Manchester City Kit and a wonderful spot by @KitConnorsseur over at X. Manchester City wore a non branded FA Cup Sleeve patch.

Dagenham & Redbridge who were one of the two Non-League sides in the competition and played League sides in all three rounds they played in, each of these games they were away and wore their away kit, also it was the only Admiral Kit in the competition (well at least from the 1st Round).

Mansfield Town were the 2nd team to wear three different kits in their three cup games. They wore their Away Kit in 1st Round (at Curzon Ashton) and their 3rd Kit in 2nd Round (at Stevenage).

The FA Cup 3rd Round, one of the highlights of the Football Season for many of us, the round that sees teams from the Premier League and Championship join the competition, often with several “Non-League” teams still involved, the dreams and hope of a New Year replicated into Footballing dreams both big and small!

In it’s 143rd season, the oldest competition in Football initially had 732 teams enter with qualifying rounds starting back in the summer of 2023, with 32 teams from these fixtures reaching the first round, where the EFL Teams first join the Competition.

The 3rd Round of The FA Cup took place over 5 days of the first weekend of 2024, between Thursday 4th January and Monday 8th January, the fixture between Crystal Palace and Everton the first to be played on Thursday of this weekend!

3rd Round Kit Log

64 Teams kicked off the 3rd Round in 32 Fixtures.

3rd Round Replays

There were 14 different Kit Manufacturers seen in this round of the FA Cup, with Macron having the most teams with 11 and Umbro with 10, the only two with double figures… four Kit Makers, Kappa, Kelme, New Balance (all Championship Clubs) and VX3 (Newport County) with just one club.

Kit Highlights

Crystal Palace kicked off the 3rd Round of the FA Cup on Thursday by wearing a special charity / 4th shirt, containing a sash something that The Eagles are well known for doning on their kits over the years. This shirt was paired with Home shorts and socks and with Everton in their 3rd Kit, it made for one of my favourite Kit Match Ups of the season so far.

For the 3rd Season in a row Arsenal used an all white kit, labelled as “No More Red”, highlighting teenage knife attacks in London. The shirts will not be for release and will sold for charities supporting the local communities. This season is different as the previous incarnations were used away from The Emirates Stadium, at Nottingham Forest in 2022 and Oxford United in 2023, so this is a rare ccurrence of Arsenal not in red at Home, Liverpool joind the No More Red theme by wearing their 3rd Kit for a unique look for one of the historic fixtures in English Football!

Maidstone United the lowest team left in the competition, continued to the 4th Round with their victory against League One Stevenage, The National League South (6th Tier) Kent Team have a kit which is based in design on the final Maidstone United kit from 1992 before the club folded and withdraw from The Football League.

An interesting Kit Match up with the Tyne / Wear Derby, in recent years when the clubs have played each other change kits have been worn to avoid a clash, this was not the case in this FA Cup game, with Newcastle United wearing alternative white shorts and socks with their Home Shirt to give a more traditional look to this fixture, something that raised mixed views across Social Media with both those glad to see this and those that called it out as a kit clash!

Blackpool are the only team that have worn three different kit looks in the opening three rounds of the Competition, having worn all Tangerine Home Kit in their opening round against Bromley, then their default home with against Forest Green Rovers and their Away Kit against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester City had one difference in their kit from any of the other competing clubs… as they continue to not use the offical FA Cup sleeve patches, due to the current sponsors of the competition, they do not use the patches as it is direct competition to their own principle sponsor. It is likely, as in previous seasons that will be fined for this action but that does not stop them! It also means the holders patch (which is silver not red) will not be seen this season.

Being a Cup competition meant that lots of clubs, introduced their own “Cup” Namesets instead of the standard league names and numbers that normally used, some stand out ones that we wanted to call out are the following…

FA Cup 2022/23 – Second Round, Kit Review

The FA Cup, the oldest football competition in the world, first kicked off over 150 years ago in November 1871 has now completed its full Second Round of the 2022 / 23 season.

The second round was made up of 40 Teams made up from 29 League One and League Two teams and 11 teams from the Non-League English Football Pyramid, with Alvechurch FC being the lowest rank team in the round who play in the 7th Tier (Southern League Premier Division Central).

Second Round Kit Log

The 40 Teams were provided by 19 Kit Manufactures, giving us a wide range of kit makers to look at.

Overall Macron produced the most kits in this round with seven teams, Puma second with five teams and third were Hummel with four teams (all EFL Clubs). There were ten manufactures that only provided the one team in this round, ths included Adidas (Accrington Stanley) and Canterbury (Buxton).

Taking a look at this per round, shows there were two manufactures lost from the First Round games.

Second Round Replay – Kit Log

There were only two replays in this round and of these only Gillingham’s match against Dagenham & Redbridge gave us a different kit match up from the original game.

Kit Highlights

I want to call out a few Kit Highlights from the total 22 Second Round games.

Gillingham – In their first game with Dagenham & Redbridge then went for a Kit Mash Up combining their Home Shirt with Away shorts and socks, to give a look which is a more a “traditional” Gills look of Blue / White / White that was used by the club until the mid 90s.

MK Dons – Another team that have combined kits to create a Mash Up, this with their home shirt and 3rd shorts / socks for white and black look, one that they have now used a few times this season but one that is not often seen by the League One Club.

Chippingham Town – One of the Non League sides who played in the Second Round, also one of the only teams that were the only representaton for their kit manufacturer. Uhlsport, a classic name in football are often seen in the England from an outfield Kit point of view but their home kit for Chippingham Town is a stylish one, with a nice use of the “yolk” in the shirt to give us something different in terms of kit aesthetics.

FA Cup 2022/23 – First Round, Kit Review

The FA Cup, the oldest football competition in the world, first kicked off over 150 years ago in November 1871 has now completed its full First Round of the 2022 / 23 season.

The first round was made up of 80 Teams made up from the 48 League One and League Two teams and then 32 teams from the Non-League English Football Pyramid, with Alvechurch FC being the lowest rank team in the round who play in the 7th Tier (Southern League Premier Division Central).

First Round Kit Log

The 80 Teams were provided by 21 Kit Manufactures, with 4 manufacturers only supplying a non league team and not a league team, this give us kit lovers plenty of different kits to admire.

Manufacturers

Puma supplied the most kits in this round with 13 kits, 7 from League teams and 6 from Non League teams, Macron supplying 11 kits with 9 League Teams and 2 Non League Teams

There were 8 Manufacturers that provided just 1 kit in the First Round, 6 suppling League Teams and 2 supplying Non League Teams.

Kit Nerd will notice the likes of Kappa, Canterbury and Uhlsport supplying kits in the competition, all for Non League Teams.

First Round Replay – Kit Log

There 7 Replays in the First Round, only AFC Fylde v Gillingham gave us a repeat in kit match ups from their first ties.

Kit Highlights

I want to call out a few Kit Highlights from the total 47 First Round games.

Oxford United – The game against Woking was originally postponed due to a Waterlogged Pitch but they played each other on 16th November saw Oxford United in a Kit Mash up not seen in the League One this season, with white away shorts paired with 3rd yellow socks to give Home, Away, 3rd Kit Mash up.

Kings Lynn Town – Pink and Yellow is a combination not often seen on the pitch, so when Kings Lynn Town defeated Doncaster Rovers in their away kit, its worthing calling out… a nice combination of colours.

York City – One of the most popular kits of the 2022 / 23 season in the Kit Community, so lets celebrate seeing it in action in the FA Cup

Buxton – In their all Non League tie with Merthyr Town, we saw Buxton in their home kit manufactured by Canterbury, someone who we have not seen in the football world for a few years now and one we will see again as Buxton moved through to Round 2.

FA Cup – Quarter Finals, Kit Review

The FA Cup, the oldest football competition in the world, first kicked off 150 years ago in November 1871 has now completed the 5th Round of the 2021/22 season.

The Quarter Finals of the competition was held on 19th March and 20th March, with all games televised. The round consisted of 8 teams, 6 Premier League Teams and 2 Championship Teams.

No replays from now on in the competition, so all ties were concluded in these games by Extra Time / Penalities if needed.

Manufacturers

Only four manufacturers left in the competition at this round, it was the first time this season that Puma did not supply the most kits, that honour fell to Hummel with three teams out of the eight left and Macron the only supplier to provide just one team with their kit.

Kit Highlights

As there was only four games, let take each match…

Middlesbrough v Chelsea

Middlebrough in their kit for 3rd time (4 games), Chelsea have worn their home kit in all games so far.

Crystal Palace v Everton

Crystal Palace another team that have been in their home kit for 3 games, the only time not in their home colours they used their 3rd Kit, which has yet to be used in the Premier League in their 3rd Round tie at Local Rivals Millwall. Everton were in a change kit for the first time in the competition this season.

Southampton v Manchester City

Southampton have worn 3 kits in their 4 games, including a special one off white shirt in Round 4, this was their 2nd appearance in their home kit. Manchester City have used their Home, Away and 3rd kits before this game, so taking to the field in their 3rd kit was also the 2nd appearance of the kit.

Nottingham Forest v Liverpool

Nottingham Forest who have played all their games at City Ground, so have worn their home kit in all their 4 games. Liverpool where in their first away game, so took to the field in a change kit for the first time in the competition this season.

FA Cup – Fifth Round, Kit Review

The FA Cup, the oldest football competition in the world, first kicked off 150 years ago in November 1871 has now completed the 5th Round of the 2021/22 season.

The 5th Round of the competition was held mid-week between 1st March and 7th March, this meant as many games as possible could be televised. The round consisted of 16 teams, 9 Premier League Teams, 6 Championship Teams and Boreham Wood of The National League, the lowest ranked and final Non League team in the competition.

No replays from now on in the competition, so all ties were concluded in these games by Extra Time / Penalities if needed.

Fifth Round Kit Log

Manufacturers

Only six manufacturers left in the competition at this round, with a fairly even split across Puma (4), Umbro, Hummel and Nike (3), with Puma maintaining their record with the most kits in each round.

Kit Highlights

Looking at some of the highlights of the Fifth Round…

There were three teams wore have worn 3 different kits in their 3 games in the FA Cup so far, with Manchester City, Southampton and West Ham United

Boreham Wood were in a “One-off” kit for their game at Everton, this was made even more special with their Premier League hosts covering the costs of this kit, as well as other costs such as travel and hotels, a really nice touch and show of support of the Non League Team.

Boreham Wood FA Cup Kit

Boreham Wood the final Non League Team left in the 2021/22 FA Cup are facing Premier League side Everton in The Fifth Round of the competition on Thursday 3rd March. Due to a clash between Boreham Wood’s Home Kit (all white) and Away Kit (Sky Blue) with Everton’s Blue / White Home kit and new 3rd Kit has been comissioned for the game. In a gesture to their opponents Everton offered to cover the costs of the new kit to support the club.

The kit may look familar, this is same template used by Manchester City and Crystal Palace Goalkeepers. Full details of the story can be found on Boreham Wood’s website here

Cheslea World Club Champions

After winning the World Club Championship, Chelsea took to the field in the Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday 19th February sporting the “World Club Champions” badge, this is likely to be the only time we will see this badge in the Premier League based on the current Premier League rules, however it will be used in European Competitions.

My personal opinion here is that is a real shame, I believe we should be proud to have The World Champions in the Premier League and they should be allowed to wear the badge until the next competition.

Luton Town – New Sponsor

Luton Town took to the field on 19th February with a new front of shirt sponsor for their home kit. Utilita replace JB Developments for the remander of the season.

Schalke 04 Sponsorship amendment

FC Schalke 04 have made the decision to remove their current sponsor given the global situation and the links their current sponsor has with the Russian State. They will replace the sponsor with simple wording of “SCHALKE 04” (mocked up example below from our friends at @KITmagazine_

German Newspaper BILD also replaced the sponsor with another logo in their recent publication.

Masters Football is returning this summer, so I put a poll out about kits, would you prefer to see teams using their current kits or sport something that was more “Retro Inspired”… the results were very much one sided and not surprising, I wonder what we will see??

FA Cup – Fourth Round, Kit Review

The FA Cup, the oldest football competition in the world, first kicked off 150 years ago in November 1871 has now completed the 4th Round of the 2021/22 season.

The Fourth Round of the FA Cup was completed over the weekend of 4th / 5th / 6th February 2022, with 32 teams being left in the competition with Kidderminster Harriers being the lowest ranked team in the competition, currently in National League North (6th Tier of English Football Pyramid), they were joined by 14 Premier League teams, 12 Championship, 3 League One, 1 League Two and 1 National League team.

No replays from now on in the competition, so all ties were concluded in these games by Extra Time / Penalities if needed.

Fourth Round Kit Log

Manufacturers

11 Kit Manufacturers were used in the Fourth Round, this is a decrease from 14 in Third Round. Puma maintaining their run of most kits used in the round with 7 in total, 22% of total kits in this round.

There were 5 manufacturers with just one kit on show – Joma, Errea, Kappa, Castore and Oneils.

Kit Highlights

Looking at some of the highlights of the Fourth Round…

Another round saw another “Special” Kit on show, this time it was Southampton who used a white variation of their 3rd (Black) kit which has the St.Mary’s Stadium graphic running through the shirt in repeating pattern. This kit was to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of the Saints Foundation.

There was a limited number of the shirts sold (500) which have now sold out.

Norwich City used their Away kit for the first time this season against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the black and neon blue kit gives a great alternative look and was a change needed against Wolves’ Old Gold.

Plymouth Argyle took Chelsea to Extra Time before losing, however they used a look that has not been seen in League One this season by combining their away kit with home socks (green / white) to avoid a clash of white socks with the European Cup Holders.

The first game of the round on Friday 4th February saw an upset when Middlesbrough knocked out Manchester United on Penalities, however it should be noted that Manchester United changed their look to white shorts and socks, normally saved for European games however this change was aid those colourblind supporters.

Arsenal – #NoMoreRed

Arsenal took to the field in their Third Round FA Cup match at Nottingham Forest on Sunday 10th January in an all white kit. The Kit was used to highligh the increase in knife crime within London and sees all the red removed from the kit. Borussia Dortmund – Kit Design Competition

Borussia Dortmund are launching a competition which give fans, kit lovers and concept kit designers the opportunity to design the kit for German team for the 2023/24 seaon. Full details can be found on how to enter and to create the design, include templates here

Michael Olise’s FA Cup Look

Crystal Palace played local rivals Millwall on Saturday 8th January 2022 in FA Cup, The Eagles used their 3rd kit, a Sky Blue and White halved shirt with blue shorts and blue / white socks. This Kit was taken to another level by winger Michael Olise with his matching Nike boots, Olise topped this look off with a wonderful goal early in the second half to see his team through to the Fourth Round of FA Cup.

Barcelona’s Senyera Kit

Kit sustainabilty has been a hot topic over recent weeks, so its worth calling out the Barcelona have used their “Senyera” kit for now the fourth calendar year… first used in 2019, it has seen action in 2020, 2021 and was used in the La Liga fixture against Granada on Saturday, so now been used in 2022 as well.

There is a new Podcast launched this week, the guys over at Kit Magazine have now released Episode 1 of their Podcast on Monday, along with some well known names in the Kit Community, this episode has a look at of the latest Kit News and in depth discussion about Forward Madison’s drip kit.

Tom, one half of the duo behind the wonderful @TheShirtUnion Twitter Account has pulled together one their handy Kit Grids for the African Cup of Nations with kicked off on 9th January, their grid show the shirts worn by each team taking part in the 2022 Competition.

The Guys over at @niclassicshirt have moved into their new premises in Newtownards, Northern Ireland and are now open for business, they were the winners of The Kitsman Award for “Best Independant Store” for 2021, all details can be found at their site for their in store and online options – https://www.niclassicshirtco.co.uk/
