Kit Highlights and Summary
In 2024 / 24 League One season teams wore 95 Kits, this was an increase in the number kits compared to last season where 85 Kits were worn, as it stands this is the joint with the Championship with the fewest number of Kit Variations seen this season.
The most worn Kit in the League was Bolton Wanderers who wore their Home Kit in 37 times, wearing in it’s default look 36 times and with away shorts once, for an all white look. Peterborough United also wore their Home Kit 36 Kits, but did not wear any variations of their Home Kit.
Lincoln City wore change kits in all 23 Away games in their League One Campaign, wearing their all white Away Kit 10 times, their all black 3rd Kit 5 times and “Mash Ups” of these two kits in another 8 games!
For the second season in a row Charlton Athletic wore their change kits in 22 of their 23 away games, the only game which they wore their Home Kit away from The Valley was the game against Cambridge United on 12th April 2025.
Northampton Town, also matched this record of 22 of their 23 games in changes kit, their only use of Home Kit in an Away game was also at Cambridge United, on 29th March 2025.
Blackpool were another team on the road not to use their default Home Kit, wearing All Tangerine (using their 3rd shorts) when in their Home Kit away from Bloomfield Road
Bristol Rovers wore three variations of their Away kit, each one a different pair of socks. Home, Away and 3rd socks all used!
Huddersfield Town provided some interesting Kit Usage this season, however it was not them directly.. there was eight teams that had to use alternative socks when playing at Huddersfield (who use Black socks with their Home Kit), Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers, Bristol Rovers (see above), Charlton Athletic, Lincoln City, Peterborough United, Wigan Athletic and Wrexham all used alternative socks.
Wrexham wore their Away at Home against Crawley Town on 21st September, this was to remember the 266 men who lost their lives in the Gresford Colliery Disaster on September 22, 1934.
There were some examples of Charity Kit Usage in League One this season.
Lincoln City, had the only dedicated Charity Kit worn on 25th January 2025.
Mansfield Town kept their tradition for support raise awareness for World Down’s Syndrome Day by wearing their Away socks with their Home Kit on 8th April 2025.
Stevenage wore their Charity 3rd Kit at Home on 18th April, they had worn this Kit on two previous occasions but this was the only time it was worn at Home.

Kit Highlights and Summary
In 2024 / 25 Championship season teams wore 95 Kits, this was an increase on the number kits compared to last season where 85 Kits were worn, this is the joint with League One with the fewest number of Kit Variations seen this season with Luton Town using nine Kit Variations, 9.5% of the total Kits used in The Championship
The single most worn Kit in the League was Norwich City for the second season in a row, who wore their Home Kit in 39 of the 46 League games, however this was a reduction from last season having worn their Home Kit 41 times in 23 / 24 Season.
Luton Town were the Kit Lovers Team of the Championship, with a perfectly matched set of kits that was able to be mix and matched, providing nine different looks with some wonderful mash ups!
Plymouth Argyle were another team that made good use of their Kit Set, using 3rd Shorts (Black) and Away Socks (White) to provide alternative Home Kit Variations with white / black shorts and socks.
A theme seen within The Championship was the use of the Kit Set to create new looks, several teams used their Kit in this way, Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle above, there were other notable examples.
Watford made good use of their Black Away Kit shorts and socks, to keep kit looking very much to the club colours.
Preston mashed up their 3rd Kit (shirt) and Away (shorts and socks), to give a different Kit Look at Sheffield Wednesday but one that tonally worked perfectly.
Also Cardiff City, Coventry City, Millwall, Oxford United, Portsmouth, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City and Swansea City, used another set of socks to create a different Kit Look, with most of these looks being used against Sheffield Wednesday!
Sheffield Wednesday’s Away Kit was an interesting story this season. When released it was shown with black / white socks, that were nice in their design, something a little different, however during the season we did not actually see these socks in action, rather plain white ones worn four times with their Away Kit (and used three times for an alternative Home Kit Look).
There were two “Special Kits” on show in the 2024 / 25 Season…
Hull City wore a special 120th Anniversary Kit against Cardiff City on 28th September.
Middlesbrough wore a “No more Red” Kit, which was a charity kit against Knife Crime, this was worn against Coventry City on 2nd November

Kit Highlights and Summary
In 2023/24 Championship season teams wore 85 Kits, this was a decrease in the number kits compared to last season where 99 Kits were worn, this is the joint with League One with the fewest number of Kit Variations seen this season. Ironically the only team with no 3rd Kit, just Home and Away had the most variations used.
The single most worn Kit in the League was Norwich City, who wore their Home Kit in 41 of the 46 League games.
Despite being the only club in the Championship with no 3rd Kit, Queen’s Park Rangers used the most kit looks in the league this season, which included 5 different Home Kit Looks. This does include their 2024/24 Home Kit which they debuted in their final Home game of the season, but they did use their 23/24 Home Kit in four different variations across 32 games, using all possible combinations of blue / white shorts and socks.
A theme seen within The Championship was the use of Change Kit / Alternative Socks to create new looks, QPR as seen above but also Birmingham City (Away Socks), Plymouth Argyle (Away), Stoke City (Alternative Red Socks), Swansea City (3rd) and West Brom Albion (3rd).
There were only three Away variations worn by Championship clubs, with Leeds United, Plymouth Argyle and Southampton all doning alternative socks (Plymouth using Home Socks) during the season. Southampton and Plymouth also using alternative socks in both fixtures between the clubs.
I want to call out Hull City Kits this season, for me they have delivered the perfect three kit looks for them this season and probably my favourite set of Kits across the English Leagues, they used their Home Kit 26 times, Away Kit 18 times including wearing it once at Home in their final Home game of the season, their 3rd was worn just twice, shame!
There were three “Special Kits” on show in the 2023/24 Season…
Bristol City in a 1974 Heritage Kit
Preston North End in a Sir Tom Finney Special Kit
Swansea City in 30th Anniversary Kit of their first appearence at Wembley in Autoglass Trophy

Kit Highlights and Summary
In 2023/24 League One season teams wore 85 Kits, this was a decrease in the number kits compared to last season where 102 Kits were worn, as it stands this is the joint with the Championship with the fewest number of Kit Variations seen this season. It was also the only League that had clubs with just two kit variations used, the Home Kit and Away Kit.
The single most worn Kit in the League was from Bristol Rovers who wore their Home Kit in 37 of 46 games, only wearing their away strip twice in the final 22 games of the season.
Cambridge United were one of six teams that wore five different kit variations this season, the most in League One however they were the only club to do this with just Home and Away Kits, wearing three different variations of their Home Kit..! Using this variations meant that they used their Home Kit 40 times out of the 46 games, alternative amber socks were used both Home and Away to create alternative kit variations.
The two clubs to wear just two kits this season in both EFL and Premier League were in League One, they were:
Carlisle United, who wore their Home Kit 36 times and Away Kit 10 times.
Fleetwood Town, who wore their Home Kit 34 times and Away Kit 12 times.
Charlton Athletic wore their change kits (and variations of them) in 22 of their 23 away games, the only game which they wore their Home Kit away from The Valley was the game against Reading on 10th February 2024.
There were instances of clubs wearing change kits in Home Games this season, with five clubs changing from their default home kit.
Bristol Rovers wore a 140th Anniversary Celebration Kit at Home to Cheltenham Town.
Cheltenham Town wore a charity 3rd Kit against Shrewsbury Town.
Exeter City wore their 3rd Kit at Home against Leyton Orient to celebrate 20 years of their Fan Trust Ownership.
Leyton Orient themselves wore their away kit at home against Barnsley, this was due to Barnsley’s white Away kit being damaged in a Bus Fire in the weeks before their fixture, so it agreed that the home team would change to their Away kit to also avoid any colourblind kit clashes.
Stevenage wore their charity 3rd kit at home against Burton Albion.

Kit Highlights and Summary
In 2023/24 League Two season teams wore 106 Kits, this was an increase in the number kits compared to last season where 93 Kits were worn, in fact this number of kits was passed just under half way through the season on 23rd December 2023. League Two was only beaten by the Premier League in the number of Kit Variations used in the English Leagues this season.
The most worn Kit in the League was from Champions Stockport County who wore their wonderful Home Kit in 39 of 46 games, only changing 7 times throughout the whole season..!
Harrogate Town wore change kits in all their away games this season, wearing their Away Kit 16 times and 3rd Kit 7 Times in two different variations…!
Between Match 40 and Match 44, AFC Wimbledon wore 5 different kits in 5 games, this included Home Kit, 2 variations of their Away Kit, 3rd Kit and Special Charity Kit.. these games were over 3 weeks between 23rd March and 13th April.
There were three “Special Kits” used in League Two this season, each of them Charity Kits…
AFC Wimbledon for War Child and their own community charity.
Newport County for Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Sutton United for Royal Marsden Cancer Charity
Although not a charity kit Mansfield Town wore Red Socks with their Home Kit for Down’s Syndrome Association awareness week, something they have also done in previous seasons.
Grimsby Town’s home kit, gives us a nice little kit quirk in League Two with several teams having wearing alternative socks due to the red socks worn by the club, last season there were 5 teams that used alternative socks when playing against The Mariners, this season that number was 6 plus Newport County wore white shorts as an alternative against them!
Morecambe with only a Home and Away Kits used 6 different kit variations, with 4 different Home Kit Looks and 2 Away Kits, using 2 Shirts, 3 pairs of shorts and 2 pairs of socks!

Can you remember that first shirt or kit that sparked your interest in Football Kits??
For me it was the set of Tottenham Hotspur kits made by Hummel, used between 1985 and 1987, as a 9/10 year old this was the first time I can remember just loving the look of a team’s kit, so much so I was drawn to support Tottenham through this period mainly due to their kit (and Chris Waddle)… and pictures of the kits within Shoot or Match Magazine, these truly were the kits that sparked my love of all things football kit now.
I want to take some time to look into these kits in a little more detail and maybe get all nostaligic about them!
Home Kit
The home kit, probably the most iconic in terms of design from Hummel with its famous chevrons playing a prodement role within the shirt itself, from their traditional location on each sleeve but also running across the middle of the shirt to create solitary band.
This chevron band seeing pinstripes coming on the yolk of the shirt at 45′ angle creating a look that has remained almost unique in the past 35 years, with only the Danish National Team have a similar look at the same time with their away kit (the kit before their own iconic Hummel Kit of the Mexico 1986 World Cup), see the end of post for a picture of that kit.
These kits were used for two seasons, in the 1985/86 season was paired with white shorts in the following season the kit was used with navy shorts as first choice, which complement the navy detailling of the shirt well.
The Home kit was also used in other forms of Mash up, looking at the wonderful Museum of Jersey’s article – Tottenham Hotspur: The Hummel Years the home kit was used with away shorts (at Manchester City in August 1985) and Away socks (at Southampton in November 1985).
Illustrations from Museum of Jerseys
Away Kit
The away kit, a sky blue kit with navy and white detailing on shirts and white trim on shorts. This was used as the away kit in 1985/86 and 1986/87 season but also made an appearence as a third kit in 1987/88, more on that shortly.
Although Sky blue is colour that is considered fairly common within the Tottenham Hotspur change colour palette nowadays, this was only introducted by Le Coq Sportif as a away kit colour choice in 1982 so was still a new choice as alternative colour for Spurs at this point. From my research there are not many pictures of the kit in action, I did find this video where the kit was worn at Newcastle United in March 1987 – Highlights Here
Also used in 1988 FA Cup game against Port Vale, which saw the 1987 Runners Up knocked out by then Division 3 (Now League One) team.
3rd Kit
The 3rd Kit, which had a similar template to the away but in navy blue with sky blue and white detailing, initially intorduced as a 3rd kit in 1986/87 season and then got moved up to “Away Kit” status in 1987/88 season however paired with the home shorts from that season.
Navy blue a more common colour for a Tottenham Hotspur change kit with it being used through the clubs history but regularly within 1960s and 1970s. Again not many pictures of the team in action in this kit, the image below was taken from 87/88 season and Spurs’ trip to Coventry City.
Goalkeeper Kit
Ray Clemence used a couple of different kits, using a similar template seen on this Tottenham Hotspur Home Kit.
Memorable Moments
Tottenham reached the FA Cup final in the 1986/87 season, where they played (and eventually lost to Coventry City After Extra Time), although using these kits that season then played in the final in their new Home Kit (which was used between 1987 and 1989)… if they had not used their new kit and carried on with this home kit as kit enthusiasts we would have been robbed of one of the most famous kit tales in football history… those sponsorless shirts!
Who remembers this advert in Shoot or Match at the time…
Maradonna wore the home kit in Ossie Ardiles Testimonial in 1986 against Inter Milan
Mordern versions
A popular set of kits with the fans has recently seen Score Draw Remakes for home and 3rd kitd that are curently available via the Tottenham Hotspur shop
AFC Sudbury’s Goalkeeper worn a version of this classic template in the 2021/22 FA Cup against Colchester United.
Denmark, as mentioned above the only other example I am aware of used at the same time with their 1985/86 Away kit.
Denmark’s Jan Molby in their Away kit (1985/86)
In 2018/19 season, Tottenham’s 3rd Kit drew some inspriation from the Hummel home kit with its diagonal pinstripes in the upper yolk of the shirt, this kit was famously worn in the Champions League Semi-Final second leg with saw a Lucas Moura’s second half hat-trick take the North London team to their first Champions League Final.

League Two Clubs are the gift that keeps on giving for us Kit Geeks, on Saturday 10th February we saw the 100th Kit Variation used by the 24 clubs in League Two in 362 Games, for comparison in whole of the 2022/23 season there were a total 94 Kits used, this number was surpassed just under half way through the season with Newport County wearing a kit mash up that contained Away Shirt / Home Shorts / 3rd Socks on at Wrexham on 23rd December 2023.
So where have the 100 kits come from?
The way that I define it is a discintive look, so taking all the elements of the kit (Shirt / Shorts / Socks) and then reviewing how that look is made up and the differences in the kit looks, so a club’s default home kit would be one look and then if the home shirt is worn with default shorts but away kit socks, that becomes a new kit variation.
Overview:
24 – Home Kits
15 – Home Kit Variations
24 – Away Kits
11 – Away Kit Variations
20 – 3rd Kits
5 – 3rd Kit Variations
1 – 4th / Special Kit
Looking at the Clubs in more detail, these kits are in order of their appearence this season and the number of times each kit has been used underneath it, this information is correct up to Saturday 10th February.
Accrington Stanley – 4 Kit used, with the Home, Away and 3rd Kits joined by a Home Kit with alternative white socks!
AFC Wimbledon – One of the ten teams to use just Home, Away and 3rd Kits
Barrow AFC – Another team with Home, Away and 3rd Kits
Bradford City – Home, Away and 3rd Kits for The Bantams
Colchester United – Three Kit variations for Colchester, however just Home and Away, with an Away variation with alternative white socks!
Crawley Town – The most variations of the 100 Kits is from Crawley Town with 8 Kits, with different elements of each of the three kits being used to create three different Home Kit looks, three Away Kits and two 3rd Kit variations. The final variation used was the 100th Kit of the Season, their Default 3rd Kit (White / Black / White) used at Crewe Alexandra.
Crewe Alexandra – 5 Kits used by Crewe, with Home and Away variations combined with the three default kits.
Doncaster Rovers – 4 Kits used, with Home Kit with away shorts being used as a variation, we are still to see their default Away Kit this season!
Forest Green Rovers – Just Home, Away and 3rd Kits used (in that order as well).
Gillingham – Our 5th Team with just Home, Away and 3rd Kits
Grimsby Town – 5 Kits for Grimsby, with mash ups of socks between Home and Away Kits
Harrogate Town – Another team to use socks to create mash up looks, Home and 3rd Kits in Harrogate’s case

Milton Keynes Dons – Another team with just Home, Away and 3rd Kits
Morecambe – Although just having Home and Away Kits this season, Morecambe have used alternative white socks and mash ups to create 5 Kit Variations in total
Newport County – One of two teams to use 7 Kit Variations, however the only team in League Two (and EFL / Premier League) to use a 4th Kit this season, also using two different Home Looks, three Away and 3rd Kit!
Notts County – Another team to use just Home and Away Kits, with alternative white shorts and socks being used to create a second Home Kit look
Salford City - The 2nd Team with 7 Kit Variations, again another team using element of the kits to create different looks, Salford’s however have only used Black Shorts / Socks and White Shorts / Socks to create the look with their three different shirts.

Sutton United – Home, Away and 3rd Kits
Swindon Town – 4 Kits, with Home combined with 3rd Socks to create an alternative look
Tranmere Rovers – The Final team with just Home, Away and 3rd Kits, also Tranmere’s Home kit at this moment is the most used kit in League Two with 23 appearences in their 31 games so far (correct as of 12th February)
Walsall – The only that has used 6 Kit Variations this season so far, Walsall are one of my favourite teams for kit usage, often creating different looks with their kit elements, this season has seen two Home Kits, three Away and just the default 3rd Kit used.
Wrexham – 4 Kits looks, with the alternative variation of Away and Home socks being 4 times so far this season!
As mentioned above the 100th Kit used was Crawley Town’s use of their default 3rd Kit against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday 10th February 2024.
Kit Grid – Up to 12th February, this shows what the fixtures were for this season so far!
One Final look, at when the Kits were worn… this view shows you at which match the new kit look / variation was first used, for example… AFC Wimbledon wore their Home Kit in their first game, 3rd Kit in their 3rd game and Away Kit in their 4th game..!
There we have it 100 Kits of League Two, let me know your thoughts and comments below or over at @Kit_Geek
I am always looking for new ways to visualise what I do, as regular followers will know I like to look into the details of the Kits worn across various football competitions, so this is a post to consolidate some of that data and it will be one that will be flexible and be updated as we move through the rest of the 2023/24 Season!
One of those things that I look at are the variations of the kits used, but what does that actually mean…
I break the Kits down into their three main elements – Shirts / Shorts / Socks, then I look at the variations of these elements worn with the shirt which is the consistent part of the kit!
Definitions of Terms used
Default Kit – This is the regisitered Kit of Each Team, so Home, Away and Third Kits (Could Also be termed as Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Kits)
Kit Variation – One of the Shorts and Socks is change with either the Home, Away and Third Kits
Mash Up – The use of elements of different kits being used together, for example Away Shirt worn with Home Shorts and Third Socks (as coined on The Football Kit Podcast)
Alternative Shorts / Socks – A bespoke alternative pair of shorts and socks, created for a specific kit
Some examples…
Default Kits – The way the kits are designed to worn, Stockport County showing their three kits at the start of the 2023/24 Season.
Kit Variation – Manchester United are an excellent example of this, Home Shirt was been worn in six different variations this season in Premier League.
Mash up – Luton Town are my go to choice here, having worn the ultimate Mash Up already this season by wearing their Third Shirt with Away Shorts and Home Socks.
Alternative Shorts / Socks – A good example here is Everton this season, who have worn their Away kit with “Default” Navy shorts and socks and also “Alternative” Salmon / Coral shorts and socks
