Kit Highlights and Summary

In 2021/22 League One teams wore 94 Kits, this was a reduction in the number kits compared to last season where 98 Kits were worn. There were 9 teams that wore just home and away kits which was the most in the English Top Four Divisions, however each of these team wore at least one kit variation which gives us some different looks through out the season.

Wycombe Wanderers wore a special kit in their against Plymouth Argyle on 15th April 2022, the kit was in the colours of Ukraine and were auctioned off after the game to raise money for charties supporting those impacted by the situation.

There were some teams that wore change kits at home for a various reasons, some took part in The Shelter “No Home Kit” campaign, wearing change kits at home to highlight those people are homeless and raise money for the charity and other to offer support to Ukraine.

Bolton Wanderers in away kit at home to Morecambe

Doncaster Rovers in 3rd Kit at home to Wigan Athletic

Sunderland at home to Crewe Alexander in their away kit

Wycombe Wanderers wore four different kits through out the season and between 2nd April and 15th April wore these four kits in four games in 13 days.

Ipswich Town wore their home kit for their first 13 games of the season, it was only in their 13th game where they deviated from their first choice home kit, wearing all blue against Portsmouth, the went on to use five different kit variations. Ipswich Town also doned all blue in their game against Lincoln City, who wore their yellow 3rd kit in supprt of the People of Ukraine

Plymouth Argyle used change kits in 18 of their 23 away games, wearing their away kit 16 time which is the most of any team in The League, this may be surprising as they are the only team with a green home kit in the league but given there are 10 teams with elements of red in the home kit, this supports those colourblind supporters and viewers.

The Two Season Kit Wonder

On Wednesday 24th November 2021 Brentford FC announced that their home kit for their inaugural Premier League Season will also be rolled over for a second season and will be their home kit for 2022/23 Season.

This is unusual for top flight teams, the last time this was seen in the Premier League was between 2012 and 2014 when Arsenal used their Home kit for two season in a row but this is something more common place in League One and League Two.

So I wanted to share with you the kits that have been used in both 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

Arsenal’s Home Kit used for 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons

Premier League

There are two examples in this season’s Premier League of kits from last season being used for this season, both are third kits and one is yet to be used yet, these are the all white third kit from the team that kicked off this piece Brentford and the second team is Brighton & Hove Albion, who’s yellow away kit from last season is registred as their 3rd kit this season.

Championship

There are four examples in The Championship this season, all four of these are again as the Premier League teams being used as 3rd Kits in the 2021/22 season with two being 3rd kits last season and two being away kits.

Cardiff City – Last season’s away is this season’s 3rd Kit and the only kit of the four that appeared in The Championship last season, this has yet to be used this season.

Fulham – their yellow away from last season has been used this as the club’s 3rd kit.

Peterborough United – are using the same 3rd Kit in the 2020/21 Promotion winning season from League One in The Championship this season.

Sheffield United – The second team relegated from the 20/21 Premier League season are using their Green / Gold 3rd kit from last season as this season’s 3rd kit as well.

League One

League One is the first division where we see home kits being re-used for a second season, in total there are 10 kits that we have seen for two division.

Accrington Stanley – A big shout here for “Accy” who are using all three of their kits for second season…

AFC Wimbledon – Closely following Accrington Stanley’s lead, AFC Wimbledon are seeing their Home and Away used again this season.

Cheltenham Town – Promoted from League Two last season, they are also using their home shirts again this season, however pairing with black shorts for 21/22 campaign, it was used with white shorts last season.

Fleetwood Town – Their unique Hummel home kit design, gets its second season of use.

Wigan Athletic – The team retained their home kit for 21/22 League Campaign, the second in a row in their 3rd Tier.

Wycombe Wanderers – Another team relegated last season, Wycombe kept both their home and 3rd Kits from last season, both the classic quartered shirt look for The Chairboys.

League Two

There are another 10 kits being used again in League Two this season.

Bristol Rovers – They are using their away kit from last season as a 3rd Kit now.

Colchester United – The Essex team are using both their home and away kits from last again in 21/22, interestingly they used a different home kit in one of their final home games of last season as a “Fans Kit”

Crawley Town – Another team to repurpose their away kit from 2020/21 as their 3rd kit this season, with the all black giving a constraiting alternative to all red home and all blue away.

Exeter City – Exeter are another team that are pairing their shirt from last season with different colour pair of shorts, last season it was black, this season going for an red short / sock combo.

Forest Green Rovers – A club where sustainability is at its heart, have had their current 3rd kit in use for 3 seasons now, introducing it 2019/20 it has seen use in the each of those seasons (thanks to @achrislatham for pointing this one out to me).

Harrogate Town – In their second in the top four divisions, they are using their Away kit again, their 3rd kit this season also made an appearence last season in the delayed FA Trophy final from 2020.

Mansfield Town – their away kit is being used again this season.

Port Vale – Port Vale’s popular all black away kit (partially designed by Robbie Williams) is retained as this season’s 3rd kit.

Sutton United – In their first season in the top four divisions have retained the home and away kits from promotion winning season, they have also introduced a black 3rd kit that gives us all three kits from the same Macron Template for tidy uniform look.

Although not common practise for teams, this still gives us a total of 26 kits re-used in the 2021/22 season that were previously used last season, with Brentford’s annoucement today will this will see this number grow in the 2022/23 season, is Football Shirt Sustainability and increased shirt cycles the future, let me know your thoughts in the comments below or over at https://twitter.com/kit_geek

Kit Highlights and Summary

The 117 kits worn in League Two was the most amount of kits worn in the top four English Leagues, there were several examples of kits worn being in all variations (Bolton Wanderers Home Kit, Morecambe Away Kit, Scunthorpe United 3rd kit), as well as several other kit mash ups with teams combining their kits to form different looks.

Bolton Wanderers were a team that used their home kit well, using different variations to ensure they could avoid kit clashes. at one point in April they used four different home kit variations in four games. The result of this home kit usage meant they only wore change kits 5 times all season, they only used their registered away kit once and their away kit with white shorts and socks 4 times.

Port Vale were another team to use their Home kit, this time they would change the socks (and baselayers) used with their home kit when playing at home to avoid clashes with their visting opponents, using combinations of black and white to change the look

There were 3 Special Kits used during the season, each of these appearences resulted in the team winnig in their shirts, so could been seen as lucky shirts this season.

Colchester United wore their one off “Supporters” shirt against Southend United on 20th April 2020.

Mansfield Town wore their “Thank you NHS” Shirt on 23rd March against Forest Green Rovers

Newport County wore their anniversary shirt celebrating 40 years since their European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final against Carl Zeiss Jena, against Bradford City

Some of the more interesting kit mash ups seen in League Two in 2020/21…

Crawley Town in Away / 3rd Kit Combo at Exeter City

Exeter City in Home / Away mash up at Grimsby Town

Oldham Athletic in Away / 3rd shorts and socks at Carlisle United

Stevenage in Away / Home mash up at Port Vale

The “Intereting” siutation that is seen in The Championship is use or more acuratley the lack of use of home kits, with only 21% of kits used in 2019/20 (so far) being a team’s full home kit, that means a staggering 79% of all kits worn being away kits, 3rd kits, Home kit variations and special commemorative kits, a great example being that of West Bromwich Albion who have worn change kits (19) more than their home kit (18) this season and have yet to wear their home kit in an away fixture this season, several other teams have only worn their home kits once or twice away from their home ground and in many cases with obvious kit clash.

Some Kit Call outs

Some things that I want to take some time to call out in particular with Championship team’s kit usage:

Luton Town have worn 9 different kits this season (3 Home variations, 3 Away variations and 3 Third kit variations), although they have worn 9 different kits, it also shows the mix and match flexibilty of their current kit range, with changes only using shorts / socks from their other kits not bespoke shorts / socks.

Four teams have worn 4 different variations of one kit, Blackburn Rovers (3rd Kit), Bristol City (Away), Reading (Away) and Sheffield Wednesday (Away), these kits all worn in different combinations with white shorts / socks.

The “Atheltic Effect”, Charlton Atheltic and Wigan Athletic are the only teams in The Championship to wear just two kits, only wearing their full home and away kits in their 37 games, Charlton even have a registered 3rd Kit that has not been used so far.

Nottingham Forest’s Away kit has been worn in three different variations, the full all blue kit and with two different pairs of white shorts, first worn against Luton Town were the shorts from the home kit (with red trim) and when playing against Brentford Macron supplied them with white shorts with a blue trim to match their blue away kit.

Special Kits

There have been three special commemorative kits worn by teams this season:

Brentford – Griffin Park Special Kit (which has been worn three time, 1 at home and 2 away as a 3rd Kit)

Brentford

Bristol City – 125th Anniversary Kit

Bristol City

Leeds United – Centenary Kit (1919-2019)

Due to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Bolton Wanderers at the end of this season, the fixture against Brentford was not played, leaving those two teams with only 45 appearances in the League.

I wrote in a previous post – EFL, Championship – Kit Variations about my five favourite kits and that has not changed since that post, so my favourite kit match up of the season was Blackburn Rovers v Bristol City.

I will continue to add to the Kit Log throughout the Playoff and will update via Twitter – @Kit_Geek but please let me know your thoughts and what your favourite kits seen the English 2nd Tier via the comments below or Twitter.

EFL, Championship – Kit Variations

Along with the Kit Variations worn by teams in the Premier League (click here) and The Champions League (click here), I have also been tracking the kits worn in Championship through 2018/19.

We are two thirds of the way through this season, so I thought it would be a good time to have a look and review what variations have been worn by the teams competing in England’s 2nd Tier.

Kit Stats (as of 15th February 2019)

  • 760 kits worn in total
  • 95 variations of kit
  • Home Kits – 43% (25% First Choice Kit, 18% Variation)
  • Away Kits – 42% (25% First Choice Kit, 17% Variation)
  • 3rd Kits – 15% (14% First Choice Kit, 1% Variation)

Championship, Kit Variations

EFL_KV1

Aston Villa have worn the most variations in the league, this includes four different uses of their home kit this season, two of their away and the debut of their third kit at Brentford on 13th February, however worn with away shorts and a alternative claret socks, so we are yet to see the full 3rd kit this season.  Their kits are a set that do complement each other, which is why we are seeing so many variations on show here.

EFL_KV2

Middlesbrough are one of three teams that have used six variations of kit this season, with three versions of their away kit, they also have two versions of white socks in their kit range, with blue trim for the away and silver trim in the third.

There is also couple of examples of alternative home kits on show, all in one colour with Ipswich Town (I know white sleeves buts lets go with it), Middlesbrough, Millwall (above) and Nottingham Forest (below)…. is there a chance we will see Aston Villa turn out in 5th all claret Home kit???

EFL_KV3

Queen’s Park Rangers are one of nine teams in the Championship that only have two registered kits this season, however that has not stopped the West Londoners racking up six variations of kit seen this season, with both home and away kits seen in three different variations.

Reading have used their away kit in all possible combinations with black / grey shorts and socks, giving them four variations of kit used this season.

EFL_KV4

We have also seen eight teams so far this season, only use their registered kits with no variations.  Bristol City, Derby County, Norwich City, Preston North End, Rotherham United and West Bromwich Albion have only used three kits this season, whilst Stoke City and Wigan Athletic have only used two kits this season.

My Favourite 5 kits

Below are my favourite five kits seen in The Championship this season (in alphabetical order).

1, Blackburn Rovers – Home Kit / 2, Bristol City – 3rd Kit

EFL_Fav1

Why use two images when these two kits are in one….!

Two fantastic kits on show, Blackburn Rover’s being the only home kit on my list and probably my favourite Umbro kit of the season across all leagues.

Bristol City’s 3rd kit in their unique colour combination, just works so well for them.

3, Leeds United – 3rd Kit

EFL_Fav2

Simple, effect and elegant…. this classy kit from Kappa is just what you want from a classic Leeds United change strip.  The bands on the sleeves and top of the socks one of the elements of this kit that just make it stand out. This is my favourite kit in the Championship this season.

4, Queen’s Park Rangers – Away

EFL_Fav3

Another Away kit that just works for me and one we have seen in three different variations (Pink-Navy-Navy and All Pink) but the kit in its original form of Pink-Navy-Pink, really works for me, the two tone pink hoops work really well as I enjoy seeing QPR wearing hoops in all kits, it does not seem right when they do not.

5, West Bromwich Albion – 3rd Kit

EFL_Fav4

Another colour combination that is part of a club’s history, this Green and Yellow kit with its wider stripes (another nod to West Brom’s past) is another kit that just works all round for me.  Interestingly labeled as a “Change” kit on the club shop with their current black / blue kit being called the “Away” kit, this has made more appearances as alternative from the home kit being worn 12 time so far this season.

Well there we have it, a review so far of what has been worn in The Championship this season, please as always let me know you thoughts and what are your kit highlights in England’s 2nd Tier by using the comments fields below or via Twitter – @Kit_Geek

EFL – Championship, Kit Log

The Championship, one of the most competitive leagues in the World with teams chasing the prize and riches of the Premier League, with 19 of the 24 teams already playing in the Top Flight since the Premier League was launched in 1992.

The League is now a third of the way through the season with teams last weekend playing their 16th games of the season – games being played on 2nd / 3rd / 4th November 2018, so I though it was a good time to take a more detailed look at the kits worn so far this season.

With the 24 teams in The Championship, we have a total of 61 kits available with 11 teams only having the two kits (currently).

efl_c16a

Aston Villa have one of the most intriguing kits of season, not produced by one of the larger or even second tier manufactures but by local fashion designer and supporter “Luke 1977”.  The Villains Home and Away kits are wonderfully interchangeable and this has seen with four variations of home kit worn this season so far and two variations of away and we are yet to see the 3rd kit used, which being navy could also be combined with home and away kits if needed.

efl_c16b

Teams currently only having two registered kits so far:

  • Birmingham City
  • Blackburn Rovers
  • Brentford
  • Ipswich Town
  • Leeds United
  • Queen’s Park Rangers
  • Reading
  • Sheffield United
  • Sheffield Wednesday
  • Stoke City
  • Wigan Athletic

efl_c16c

West Bromwich Albion’s Home and 3rd kits are for some classic designs, influenced by the kits of the early 80s, the design and colours used are fantastic.

Within The Championship we are seeing a wide selection of colours from across the colour palette… in fact we can even produce a “Championship Rainbow”!!!

efl_c16r

And that is not mentioning the Brown (Brentford Away) and varying shades of Grey (Reading Away, Millwall Away), Black (West Bromwich Albion Away) and Pink (Queen’s Park Rangers).

Kits yet to be seen this season:

  • Aston Villa 3rd Kit
  • Bristol City Away
  • Norwich City Away

Kit highlights:

There a few kits that I want to call out, well just because I like them…

Bolton Wanderers Home kit, I really like this kit from Macron…. I think its because it reminds me of the 1986 England Home kit from Umbro.

bwfc_h

Queen’s Park Rangers Away Kit, this Pink kit from Errea, with its subtle hoops to fit into QPR’s traditional kit scheme works really well for me, combined with navy shorts and navy detailing, the whole package looks great.

qpr_a

Bristol City 3rd kit…. the classic Bristol City Purple and Lime Green should always be given time to shine, what a kit!

bcfc_3

West Bromwich Away, I have already mentioned this kit above but still worth mentioning again and seeing in all its glory.
